Ingredients

  • 🥚1 large egg
  • 🌶️¼ tsp black pepper, freshly ground
  • 🧂 salt, to taste

Pro tips

  • For easier peeling, use eggs that are a few days old, not super fresh ones.
  • Adjust cooking time by 30 seconds to a minute to achieve your preferred yolk consistency (e.g., less for runnier, more for firmer).
  • A small crack in the shell before boiling can sometimes prevent the egg from bursting, but be gentle!
  • Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.

Method

  1. 1Carefully place the egg into a small saucepan and cover with cold water by about an inch.
  2. 2Bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat. Once boiling, immediately reduce heat to low.
  3. 3Simmer for 6-7 minutes for a firm but slightly jammy yolk, or 8-9 minutes for a fully hard-boiled egg.
  4. 4While the egg is cooking, prepare a bowl of ice water.
  5. 5Once cooked, immediately transfer the egg from the hot water to the ice bath using a slotted spoon.
  6. 6Let it cool in the ice bath for at least 2 minutes to stop the cooking process and make peeling easier.
  7. 7Gently tap and roll the egg on a hard surface to crack the shell, then peel under cool running water.
  8. 8Slice in half or into quarters, season generously with freshly ground black pepper and a pinch of salt.
