Ingredients
- 🧀8 mozzarella cheese sticks
- 🍚1 cup all-purpose flour
- 🥚2 large eggs
- 🍞1 cup breadcrumbs
- 🧄½ tsp garlic powder
- 🌿¼ tsp dried oregano
- 🧂 salt and black pepper, to taste
- 🌻2 cups vegetable oil
- 🥫½ cup marinara sauce
Pro tips
- Freezing the cheese sticks before breading and again before frying is crucial for preventing cheese meltdowns.
- For extra crispiness, you can add a tablespoon of cornstarch to your flour mixture.
- Adjust the seasonings in the breadcrumbs to your preference; paprika or cayenne can add a nice kick.
Method
- 1Cut each mozzarella cheese stick in half to make 16 smaller pieces, or keep them whole if preferred. Place them in the freezer for at least 30 minutes to firm up.
- 2Set up a breading station: In one shallow dish, add flour. In a second shallow dish, whisk eggs. In a third shallow dish, combine breadcrumbs, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- 3Dredge each frozen cheese stick first in flour (shake off excess), then dip in egg, and finally coat thoroughly in the seasoned breadcrumbs. Repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating for a double layer.
- 4Return the breaded cheese sticks to the freezer for another 15-20 minutes to help the coating adhere during frying.
- 5Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or pot over medium-high heat to about 350°F (175°C).
- 6Carefully fry the cheese sticks in batches for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally. Do not overcrowd the pan.
- 7Remove the fried cheese sticks with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- 8Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce for dipping.
