Ingredients

  • 🥣1 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
  • 🍚1 cup basmati rice
  • 🧅1 onion
  • 🍅2 tomatoes
  • 🫚1 inch ginger
  • 🧄2 cloves garlic
  • 🌿1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 🟠½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 🌶️1 tsp garam masala
  • 🧈2 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 🧂 salt, to taste
  • 🌿 fresh cilantro, chopped

Pro tips

  • For extra richness, add a dollop of ghee on top of the dal just before serving.
  • Adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more hot water if you prefer it thinner.
  • A squeeze of fresh lime juice at the end brightens the flavors beautifully.

Method

  1. 1Rinse masoor dal and basmati rice separately until water runs clear. Soak dal for 15 minutes, drain.
  2. 2Chop onion finely, dice tomatoes, mince ginger and garlic.
  3. 3In a pot, heat ghee or oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. 4Add chopped onion and sauté until golden brown. Stir in ginger and garlic, cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. 5Add diced tomatoes, turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook until tomatoes soften and oil separates.
  6. 6Add the drained dal and 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, or until dal is tender.
  7. 7In a separate pot, cook the rinsed rice with 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 12-15 minutes until water is absorbed and rice is fluffy.
  8. 8Serve the dal hot with fluffy basmati rice, garnished with fresh cilantro.
