Ingredients
- 🥣1 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
- 🍚1 cup basmati rice
- 🧅1 onion
- 🍅2 tomatoes
- 🫚1 inch ginger
- 🧄2 cloves garlic
- 🌿1 tsp cumin seeds
- 🟠½ tsp turmeric powder
- 🌶️1 tsp garam masala
- 🧈2 tbsp ghee or oil
- 🧂 salt, to taste
- 🌿 fresh cilantro, chopped
Pro tips
- For extra richness, add a dollop of ghee on top of the dal just before serving.
- Adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more hot water if you prefer it thinner.
- A squeeze of fresh lime juice at the end brightens the flavors beautifully.
Method
- 1Rinse masoor dal and basmati rice separately until water runs clear. Soak dal for 15 minutes, drain.
- 2Chop onion finely, dice tomatoes, mince ginger and garlic.
- 3In a pot, heat ghee or oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- 4Add chopped onion and sauté until golden brown. Stir in ginger and garlic, cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- 5Add diced tomatoes, turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook until tomatoes soften and oil separates.
- 6Add the drained dal and 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, or until dal is tender.
- 7In a separate pot, cook the rinsed rice with 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 12-15 minutes until water is absorbed and rice is fluffy.
- 8Serve the dal hot with fluffy basmati rice, garnished with fresh cilantro.
