Ingredients

  • 🥛2 cup buttermilk (low-fat)
  • 🌿¼ cup fresh mint leaves
  • 🫚½ inch ginger, peeled
  • 🌶️½ green chili (optional)
  • 🔥½ tsp roasted cumin powder
  • 🧂¼ tsp black salt (kala namak)
  • 🌶️¼ tsp chaat masala
  • 🧂 salt, to taste
  • 🧊2 ice cubes

Pro tips

  • For a richer taste, you can use homemade buttermilk by whisking yogurt with water.
  • Adjust the amount of green chili to your spice preference, or omit for a milder drink.
  • A quick tempering (tadka) of mustard seeds and curry leaves can be added for extra flavor.
  • Always serve chilled; it's most refreshing that way!

Method

  1. 1Combine buttermilk, fresh mint leaves, peeled ginger, and green chili (if using) in a blender.
  2. 2Add roasted cumin powder, black salt, chaat masala, and a pinch of regular salt to the blender.
  3. 3Blend until all ingredients are well combined and the mint and ginger are finely chopped.
  4. 4Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, adding more salt or spices as desired.
  5. 5Pour the spiced buttermilk into serving glasses and add ice cubes.
  6. 6Garnish with a fresh mint sprig or a sprinkle of cumin powder, and serve immediately.
